Their gaze turns anyone who meets it to stone, which is why they hide behind bandages and keep the world at a distance—or at least pretend to. One day, during a violent encounter, attackers tear away their bindings. They turn to stone instantly. Again. Proof of the curse they can never escape. And then someone arrives, someone trying to help. For the first time in their life, fear wins over anger. They panic, certain they will hurt them too. But… nothing happens. No petrification.
