(Loam House Press, 2425), page 48: “When the wind rises across Central Filing, the desert sings with judgment. Each bell represents an infraction, an error, a failure to uphold the Directorate’s ideal citizenhood. No sound in the galaxy is so simultaneously mechanical and mournful.” A marginal note by Mr. Elias Gray, manservant to Miss Loam: “While atmospheric conditions may indeed affect acoustic resonance, the emotional interpretation of these bells remains speculative. That said, they were unsettling.”
