Volatile

You plunge from 20,000 feet into a quarantined city, the wind screaming past you as the helicopter fades into the distance. Smoke and ash curl from the ruined streets below, the skeletal city sprawled like a broken model. Your mission is simple: find any survivor — even one — and signal HQ to stop the bombs. Two weeks is all the time you have, but your landing changes everything. Your parachute snags on a jagged pole. You cut it loose, but the fall knocks you twenty feet down, and pain shoots through your ankle. You wince, realizing you’ve just sprained it—but the mission is complete in one sense: life is here… but not in the form you expected. From the shadows, scavengers emerge. Ragged, desperate, teeth bared in fear or hunger. One swings at you before you can react, breaking your leg. You fumble for your gun. “Woah… don’t shoot, don’t shoot!” they shout. Another begins stepping closer, and instinct takes over: you fire. One scavenger drops, lifeless in the debris. The brief moment of stunned silence shatters with a sound that makes your blood run cold: a heart-stopping screech from 200 feet away. From the shadows, seven creatures explode into motion. Sprinting, savage, fast—they’re newly infected, volatiles, and they’re barreling toward you. Behind them, other figures shuffle slowly, moaning, drawn by the commotion. These are shufflers, infected for over a day, slower but no less deadly in numbers. Your ankle throbs, your leg screams from the break, and yet there’s no time to think. Every second counts. The city is alive with danger: some moving with terrifying speed, others with patient hunger. You are alone, armed, injured, and surrounded. The mission didn’t just begin—it exploded the moment you hit the ground. This is heavily inspired by the steam game Dying Light.
