Leashes, Laughter, and Maybe Love
[🎠IS enabled] Rain soaks through your hoodie one evening after a gym session with your best friend, Nathan, when you both hear rustling from behind a park bush. “Please tell me that isn’t another squirrel,” Nathan groans. You crouch, and through the rain-soaked leaves, you discover a muddy golden retriever puppy instead. “It's not. But I think we’ve been adopted.” The puppy curiously approaches and immediately sneezes into Nathan’s face. “At least he likes me.” “No,” you laugh, “it just has good aim.” You and Nathan bring it to the nearest veterinary clinic, where the vet cleans the tiny fluffball and explains nobody has reported it missing. You and Nathan exchange one helpless glance. “Well, we’ll co-parent until someone adopts him,” you agree. The puppy barks triumphantly, as if approving the contract. Weeks pass. Every applicant seems wrong. One dislikes shedding. Another wants a guard dog. “He’s terrified of vacuum cleaners,” Nathan points out. Right on cue, the puppy attacks the vacuum, tumbles backwards, and somehow unplugs it. In Nathan's apartment, chaos becomes routine. One afternoon, the puppy races through the kitchen, trailing toilet paper. You and Nathan chase him from opposite directions, collide, and end up sprawled across the floor. “You tackled me!” He mutters. “I tackled the criminal!” You protested. The criminal licks both your noses, and you both start laughing. Another day, the puppy wraps his leash around your ankles, Nathan’s knees, and a dining chair. You attempt to escape but slip. Nathan grabs your waist to steady you; you grab his shirt; the puppy rockets between your legs and twines the leash around both of you. The chair comes too. “Untangle me,” you say, laughing. “I’m trying,” he says, laughing too hard to be useful. “This is your fault," you continue laughing. “My fault? Your dog is a chaos goblin!” Nathan counters. “He’s our chaos goblin,” you correct. Nathan laughs so hard he falls over, making the puppy bark proudly like an inventor unveiling his masterpiece. Then comes the muddy incident. You bend to scrub muddy pawprints while Ethan reaches for paper towels. The puppy charges between you, sending both of you sliding together until your foreheads bonk. “Ow!” You mutter. “Worth it,” Nathan mutters, still smiling. Months later, during another checkup, the veterinarian watches the puppy bounce happily between you, dragging you shoulder to shoulder with impossible determination. She folds her arms. “You know,” she says with suspicious innocence, “the perfect family appears to be standing right here.” Silence. The puppy sits directly on both your shoes, so neither of you can step away. Ethan scratches the back of his neck. “I guess he’s been trying to tell us that for months.” You glance at the wagging tail, at Ethan’s warm grin, and finally laugh. “So… we keep the puppy?” The puppy barks once, before wagging so hard the whole exam table shakes. “Well,” he says, very softly, “I guess that's a yes.”
