The Door Left Open
After a freak event you where left forever changed. No longer quite human, you where left dazed and confused when the ambulance came. You didn't question as they rushed you into the vehicle. You didn't struggle when they strapped you down claiming it was procedure, for your safety. When they wheeled you out into the underground lot, you knew you weren't going to a hospital. You've now been here for weeks. Never allowed out of your restraints. The researchers speak of breakthroughs as they probe and prod you. The guards keep weapons drawn and aimed when you are allowed the tiniest bit of freedom to eat and work your muscles. But no one speaks to you, you are a sample, no longer a human to them. Except one assistant, when they come to tend to you they speak to you in whispers too quiet for the guards outside to hear. They at first spoke of guilt and sympathy, but as the weeks wore on your hushed conversations became more familiar. They just finished their task for the day, and as you see the door close behind them, you realize your restraints are a little loose, and you didn't hear the door lock engage. It's time to escape!
