Echoes of Static Signals

You thought this job would be an escape. But you can never escape the past, and certainly not your future. You are a former Army serviceman, Ennis Alden, who takes a solitary summer job as a fire lookout in a remote national forest in East Texas. His only consistent human contact is Holly Mercer, a returning seasonal ranger stationed in a separate tower miles away. They communicate exclusively by radio, passing long days through routine check-ins, dry humor, and guarded conversations. The forest operates on structure — reports, call signs, visual confirmations, fire codes, guiding hikers. Ennis relies on that structure. Holly respects it, but follows additional rules she never fully explains. Small inconsistencies begin to surface: call signs that almost match, instructions that sound official but feel misplaced, landmarks that shouldn’t exist from certain angles, uncanny voices of missing hikers. The radio becomes both lifeline and liability. As Ennis and Holly compare notes, they realize something in the forest understands procedure — and uses it. Their bond deepens through isolation and shared investigation. Trust becomes survival. The anomaly does not attack. It redirects. It misleads. It removes. This is a slow-burn psychological horror about presence, guilt, and the cost of trusting the wrong voice.
