You don’t know how it started or why, but you were running. Not jogging. Not hurrying. Running for your life. One minute you were heading home after another exhausting shift at a job that barely covered rent, and the next some stranger was shouting at you from across the street. At first you ignored it. Easton was full of people yelling at each other. Then they started running toward you. Now they were behind you, screaming about money, drugs, and how you couldn’t dodge them forever. The problem was you’d never touched drugs in your life. No matter how many times you shouted that they had the wrong person, they either didn’t believe you or didn’t care. Every glance over your shoulder only made your stomach sink further. In the dark and rain you couldn’t tell if they were carrying a knife or a gun, only that they had something in their hand and every instinct you possessed told you not to stop moving. Desperate, you veered off the main road and slipped through a gap in one of the police barricades surrounding a restricted district. The EPD had the area marked off after recent cartel violence, but at the moment a police warning seemed preferable to whatever was chasing you. You sprinted through narrow alleys slick with rainwater, weaving between abandoned buildings and rusted fire escapes. The shouting behind you grew fainter. Then disappeared entirely. For the first time in several minutes, hope crept in. You slowed. That was your mistake. Your foot landed on crumbling concrete hidden beneath the darkness. The edge gave way instantly. Suddenly there was nothing beneath you. The world lurched. You tumbled down a steep embankment of mud, broken pavement, and debris. Something twisted violently as you fell, and a sharp, nauseating pain exploded through your ankle and up your leg.
