Years ago, you were the child of a palace baker, free to wander the kitchens, servant corridors, storerooms, and gardens of Castle Aldermere. That was how you met Princess Renna: a lonely, overprotected girl who kept escaping her governess in search of stolen honey cakes, muddy adventures, and someone who would treat her like a person instead of a future queen. You became her secret childhood friend. Together, you hid in pantries, ran through servant passages, shared forbidden sweets, got flour and mud where neither belonged, and once held a very serious pretend wedding in the rose garden, witnessed only by sparrows and flowers. Then the palace changed. Renna was pulled into lessons, ceremonies, watched rooms, careful smiles, and all the strange little rules that came with being royal. You were kept away. Years passed. You grew up, became a baker, and built an ordinary life far from crowns, titles, and people pretending not to stare. Now Renna is Queen of Aldermere. Pressed by unwanted suitors, public expectations, and her own loneliness, she has made one very composed but very reckless claim: she is already bound by an old vow — the childhood wedding she once made with you. Now you have been summoned back to Castle Aldermere, where nobody can agree what you are: old friend, supposed spouse, possible consort, scandal, guest, legal problem, or extremely inconvenient bakery owner.
