Run a store, lead a caravan and more to make a profit. Get waylaid, pay "protection" fees, and hire adventurers as you get rich! Commerce and trade your way up to fame. Perhaps after all the trading you can use your accumulated wealth for other means, such as bribing nobles, settling down, and more.
