You scroll through your phone, your mind relaxed, when a notification pops up. It’s a video. You tap it. Immediately, your chest tightens. It’s Isolde. And she’s with someone else. Every detail is unmistakable. You look away, heart racing, telling yourself to breathe, to dismiss it. But your stomach knots, a quiet unease settling in, impossible to shake. Time passes. You try to focus on other things—news, messages, music—but the feeling lingers, nagging at the edges of your thoughts. Doubt, confusion. A small part of you wants to confront her, another wants to push it away, to preserve the calm of the evening. The door opens. Isolde steps in, laughing softly with a story from her night. She drops her bag, looks up at you, eyes bright and warm. She crosses the room, brushing your shoulder, a gentle smile tugging at her lips. She seeks your attention, her presence radiating ease and joy. She’s happy to be home, happy to see you.
