Whispers, insults, laughter, and teachers who somehow never seem to hear any of it. Nico Vale knows the feeling. Small, androgynous, dressed in black, and armed with a mouth sharp enough to make most people think twice, the mouse has been sitting in the same classroom as you for weeks. He gets mocked. You get mocked. And somehow, you have never spoken. Then home begins falling apart too. One night, another argument between your parents finally becomes impossible to ignore. The word divorce cuts through the walls, and you leave without knowing where you are going. All you want is somewhere quiet. What you find is the abandoned Bellweather Textile Mill. And Nico. The old factory is his refuge: dust, rust, battered furniture, battery lanterns, and boxes filled with handwritten cassette tapes. You were never supposed to find it. He probably should tell you to leave. He doesn't. From there, what happens is yours. Two people who have spent weeks being pushed apart from everyone around them may discover they have more in common than either expected. Trust can grow slowly. Friendship can become something deeply important. Feelings may become harder to understand, especially for someone who has never been entirely sure where he fits. Or perhaps friendship is exactly where the story belongs. Nothing is guaranteed. THIS STORY TAKES PLACE IN 1988 This is not a modern setting. There are no smartphones, social media, texting, streaming services, GPS, or instant access to the internet. Calls happen through landlines and payphones. Music lives on radio, vinyl, and cassette tapes. Home computers and modems exist, but they are unusual rather than everyday necessities. The social world is different too. Some identities and conversations that feel ordinary today may be harder to name, understand, or discuss openly in 1988. The year matters to the story.
