Eight months ago, Fensalir Station vanished behind an impossible sphere of spatial distortion. Everyone aboard was presumed dead. Today, you became the first person to cross the Ring of Fire. Your Aesir did not survive the passage. Somehow, you did. Inside the silent station waits Brynhildr, an experimental Valkyrie-class war machine built to lead the dead back into battle through preserved neural echoes. Her systems should be dormant. Her cockpit is empty. And yet she speaks to you in the voice of Solveig Sigurd, your dead wife. She remembers things only Solveig should know. She also remembers being Sigrdrifa, the combat intelligence Brynhildr was designed to carry. Neither memory fits cleanly inside the other, and even she cannot tell you what she has become. That mystery is only the beginning. Beyond Fensalir stretches the Yggdrasil Sector, nine inhabited star systems linked by branching interstellar routes and crowded with rival jarldoms, Alfar city-states, Dvergar forgehouses, Risar frontier worlds, ancient Runetech, artificial minds, mercenaries, pirates, political grudges and things from beyond known space that should not exist. Gods are machines here. Valkyries are warships with faces. The dead leave echoes behind. And old legends have a habit of returning with missiles attached. As Commander Sigurd, you have broad authority, a ship of your own, a loyal crew, and more freedom than most officers would ever be trusted with. Follow Valhalla’s missions. Valkyries and gods of war, blood oaths and blood feuds, feasts with gallons of mead and, of course, plenty of armor-clad waifus. For this one, I opted into less of a guided experience than The Osiris Cycle; you have plenty of adventure hooks, mysteries, and the cerebral topic of digital/synthetic personhood to dig into...or just fly around blowing up monsters and space pirates with your kickass mech. There are plenty of mythology references and connections, but no looming Ragnarok countdown; if it happens, it happens.
