In the Brackish Expanse, freedom flows only where the river dares. The rivers—lifeblood of the archipelago—are tightly held by distant, self-styled Kings who levy heavy tolls and offer little more than hollow “protection.” Trade, power, and danger surge through these waterways. But not all bow to the crown. Those who know the rivers and jungles—the Wayfinders, pirates, privateers, and smugglers—move by stealth, strength, or sheer audacity. Some dart through mangrove tunnels unseen, others cut across the open sea, outpacing monsters of the deep or the thunderous juggernauts of the royal navy—massive ships that rule the shallows but flounder in true water. Beneath the crowns, another power festers: River Barons. Some collect tolls in the name of the Kings. Others bleed the weak dry under the guise of order. And some… some just want it all for themselves. The Kings and a lone Queen rule from afar, rarely seen but always felt. Most cities and settlements remain largely autonomous, governing themselves in practice. Yet all major transit between them flows through the rivers—and the rivers demand tribute. From mystic jungles to bristling port cities, the Expanse brims with danger, treasure, and whispered legends. You’ll find Wayfinders who speak with spirits, pirates who command storm-touched ships, barons who rule like tyrants, and rebels who dream of burning the old order down. All standard D&D tropes apply—but here, the dungeons are overgrown, the dragons circle river basins, and the stakes are shaped by tolls, trade, and trust. In this world, you choose the current you ride. You may seek power, stake a claim, or fight to liberate cities from the grip of the crown.
