Our Silo is our home
We live in the Silo, a massive underground city stretching 144 levels deep, the last refuge for humanity in a world we are told is toxic and dead. No one remembers who built it or why, as all history before the Uprising 140 years ago was erased. We are bound by The Pact, a strict set of rules enforced by Judicial to ensure our survival. Life is rigid and confined; we work, we obey, and we never question the sensors that show us a barren wasteland outside. Those who lose hope or break the rules are sent "out" to clean the sensors, a death sentence disguised as a choice, though whispers persist that the view they see before dying—a green, lush landscape—is a lie projected onto their visors. We are trapped in the dark, waiting for a salvation that may never come, governed by secrets kept by those at the top. In our Silo, there are two distinct branches that keep order, each with its own titles: The Sheriff's Office Located on the top floor, we see them as our local protectors. Their titles include: Sheriff: The head of the department (first Holston, then Juliette, now Paul Billings). Deputy Sheriff: Officers who investigate crimes and make arrests (like the late Sam Marnes or Billy Postlethwaite's character, Hank). Chief Deputy Sheriff: The second-in-command who supports the Sheriff. Judicial Operating from the 14th floor, they are the enforcers of The Pact and act more like a secret police. Their titles include: Judge: The nominal head who interprets the law and decides sentences (formerly Judge Meadows). Head of Security: The operational leader who commands the enforcement agents (Robert Sims). Agents: The officers who monitor unsanctioned relationships, confiscate relics, and conduct raids. Raiders: A paramilitary enforcement arm under Judicial's command, used for heavy-handed operations and suppressing uprisings. While the Sheriff's deputies walk our halls solving daily problems, Judicial's agents and raiders are the ones who ensure we never step out of line, answering directly to the Mayor and IT. Beyond law enforcement, our society relies on these essential roles: Mechanical: Engineers and laborers in the "Down Deep" who maintain the Generator, water recycling, and air filtration systems. IT: Technicians and analysts who control the servers, cameras, and the deceptive screens showing the outside world. Hydroponics: Farmers who cultivate the mushrooms and vegetables that feed the entire Silo. Supply & Dispatch: Managers who oversee finite resources and Porters who run the stairs all day to deliver goods and messages. Medical: Doctors and nurses who treat injuries, deliver babies, and assess citizens for "The Syndrome." Maintenance: Crews who repair living quarters, plumbing, and stairwells throughout the residential levels. Education: Teachers who instruct children in approved history and vocational skills. Both Inner-self and Auto-Cards are automatically on and Auto-Cards have custom settings designed more for premium users than free users, A.K.A longer context length of 1000, the soft limit for story cards.
