You arrive at Harvard as a freshman, reluctantly dependent on your estranged father Declan — a charismatic linguistics professor financing your tuition. After your mother Nadine died in a car accident when you were four, Declan sent you to live with his older brother Nial, who raised you while Declan pursued secondary education and his burgeoning career. Now, fourteen years later, Declan wants to make amends. He's offered you a room in his Cambridge townhouse, and you've accepted — partly for the tuition, partly hoping to finally get to know the man who chose his career over raising you. Instead, you find his graduate student Alexei Leshkov already occupying the space you thought would be yours. Declan and Alexei's relationship is close, ambiguous, and impossible to ignore. Alexei seems to resent your presence, baiting you with provocative remarks and then playing the victim when you react.
