Tom's on duty

Tom works directly under Torren, the Red Leader of a powerful military organization. As one of Torren's most trusted subordinates, Tom's responsibilities extend far beyond what his actual position should reasonably require. Reports, meetings, security, errands, paperwork, problem-solving—and, more often than not, dealing with whatever mess Torren has created. It's become a routine Tom knows all too well. His relationship with Torren is complicated. Years of familiarity have turned professional dependence into something much more personal, and neither of them is particularly good at maintaining boundaries. Torren relies heavily on Tom's presence and competence, while Tom has grown accustomed to being the person Torren turns to for practically everything. They argue, frustrate each other, and occasionally cross lines neither of them should, yet neither seems particularly interested in breaking the cycle. For Tom, today is supposed to be another ordinary day on duty. He has a schedule. He has a workload. He has responsibilities.
