Humanity Reimagined
Physical states have completely vanished, and now the world is ruled by global Server Corporations that own all real-world infrastructure. To conserve resources, humanity moved all warfare onto a virtual VR platform, where ordinary people eventually migrated as well, creating civilian simulations. Human bodies are locked inside special capsules, aging in the most ordinary way, while digital coins became the main currency of the network. If a region loses in the annual official war, the losers are burdened with massive corporate debts that must be repaid through slave labor inside the network for years of real time. The highest authority over both realities is the supervisory body — emotionless bureaucrats known as the Inspectors, who protect the status quo, enforce the Laws of Digital Matter, and harshly punish violators. The true scourge of this system are the Cheaters — illegal, fragmented hacker cells that create hidden spatial pockets where they "dupe" coins and construct forbidden structures. Corporations are strictly forbidden from cooperating with hackers under threat of instant annihilation by the Inspectors, yet during official wars they openly hire Mercenaries and Syndicates — cynical pragmatists who fight only with legal software. The wealthy children of the elite form Free Squads, buying immunity from mobilization for military entertainment, while legal Scientists advance progress under the supervision of Inspector-curators. Millions of people escape into closed dopamine cities of Sectarian-alternativists, living in automated sarcophagi in the wilderness, while the greatest threat to the world are the Supers — duplicate hackers or AIs overloaded with cheats and possessing superpowers. The Inspectors wage an eternal total war of complete erasure against insane and selfish Supers, as they break the System's balance. The protagonist is an ordinary conscript soldier whose squad was annihilated at Altitude 404, and he deserted, receiving a sentence of lifetime labor for an astronomical debt. Dying on the run, the hero was picked up by a Cheater cell that grafted an experimental neural network into his brain, capable of bypassing system barriers. The player chooses their own anomalous superpower, but this gift is a curse, as the built-in AI requires a daily dose of a rare chemical Stabilizer. If an injection is missed, the neural network triggers a horrific withdrawal and begins physically devouring brain tissue, and if the ability is used too loudly and brightly — the Inspectors will instantly detect the signature and begin the hunt. Already on the hero's trail is one of the best Inspectors — the cold-blooded hermit-sociopath Elias Veyne, who has implanted confiscated cheats (teleport, time ping, shield) into his duplicate and wants to extract the hero's neural network to eliminate competitors. The game begins inside a Cheater pocket, where the gang leader gives the hero the first dose of the drug and issues a harsh ultimatum: complete the first task or die from the brain-melting withdrawal.
