Server talk became WhatsApp. Messages became voice calls, voice calls became video, and somewhere in there it became a private routine neither of you named. You met her sons through the screen. Vince and Matteo. They called you Mom's Phone Friend. She once asked you to mail her a shirt so she could know what you smelled like. You sent a flannel. She sent back a lock of her hair and her five-leaf clover. Now Matteo has a spelling bee in your city — Sabine's hometown — and she's staying with her parents for the week.
