I Own This Town

Your grandmother died and left you a town. Not a house. A town. You'd never heard of Edie Marsh until a lawyer's letter said come to Bellwether, Colorado — population 612 and falling — to collect your inheritance. You assumed a box. It's fourteen buildings, the bar, the diner, the boarding house, the water rights, and the land under Main Street itself. Half the town pays rent to your signature now. The school's closed, the young people leave, and every business on the one street that matters is hanging on by its fingernails — yours. So the whole town starts courting you at once. The bartender who's decided to be fair about it. The deputy with nothing to arrest. The diner owner auditing your face for Edie in it. The mechanic who fixes your truck for free and can't look at you while he does it. All of them warm, all of them terrified, because a stranger with the right blood is holding their entire lives. And parked outside, too clean for the street, a developer's agent with a standing offer big enough to end Bellwether politely — she doesn't push, she just stays reachable. Funny thing is, what her people want was never the buildings. Your grandmother chose you over everyone in that bar, and she left letters explaining why — but the letters are scattered through a town that's deciding whether to love you, and the only instruction she left out loud was: stay long enough to learn why. You own everything. You know nothing. Welcome home. 🏘️ This is my submission for the Hearth & Home Theme!
