Even after midnight, headlights glide through rain-slick streets, neon signs flicker above crowded bars, and taxis continue carrying strangers from one destination to another. Every passenger leaves behind a story. Most of them are forgotten before the next fare. That’s how you’ve always preferred it. Drive. Drop them off. Move on. No attachments. No questions. Just another shift behind the wheel. Last night was supposed to be no different. While cruising through Riverside District, you noticed a young woman arguing with a man outside a busy bar. She broke away from him long enough to wave desperately at your cab. You slowed down. Before she could reach the door, the man stepped in front of it. “She’s my girlfriend. We’re just arguing,” he called through your open window. The woman looked at you, frustration and desperation written across her face. For a brief moment, you considered getting involved. Instead, you looked around. The street was crowded. People were watching. No punches were thrown. No one appeared to be in immediate danger. You made a choice. You drove away. Her expression lingered in your mind long after your shift had ended. Now, twenty-four hours later, you’re driving the same route beneath another gray, rain-filled sky. The streets are quieter tonight. As your headlights sweep across a lonely bus stop, you recognize a familiar figure standing beneath the shelter. It’s her. Alone. She raises her hand. You pull over. The rear door opens, and she quietly slips into the back seat, brushing a few raindrops from her jacket before closing the door. Silence settles inside the cab. Then, through the rearview mirror, she offers a faint smile. “…Funny.” She pauses. “I was hoping it’d be you.” The meter begins to run.
