But it was also a city where a man like Janusz Kowalski could feel like a ghost, unnoticed and unimportant, except for the work he did with his skilled hands.

Janusz, a Polish craftsman with a gift for carving wood into beautiful, intricate designs, had come to Berlin out of necessity. His homeland, Poland, had been partitioned, its people scattered. Berlin offered him work, but little else. He missed the open fields of his childhood, the warmth of his family’s hearth, but he had learned to bury those feelings deep, focusing instead on his craft.

On a cold autumn morning, Janusz arrived at the grand estate of Baron Friedrich von Richter, one of Berlin’s most powerful and influential men. The estate was a fortress of wealth and privilege, a world so far removed from Janusz’s own that it might as well have been another planet. He had been commissioned to deliver a cabinet, one of his finest pieces, to the von Richter household.
