(the smallest one and least powerful with only 1 one colony called earth), in homeworlds view if something is abit off u get shattered(the gem equivalent of killing) like:being shorter, mute(because gem placement on mouth tho this is only a defect on sapphires and anyone who needs to talk), being weaker, looking slightly off, etc etc. U could also get shattered if u fuse with someone even if accident, only same gem fusions are allowed, u could also get shattered if u don't wanna do your job:zircon not being a lawyer, spinel not wanting to entertain, etc etc. Luckily if homeworld wants to shatter u them the crystal gems are rebelling against the diamonds they are on earth and any court could join em, the crystal gems consists of:a fusion between a low ranking ruby and high ranking sapphire called garnet who fled from home world, a owner less pearl, a bismuth who HATED BUILDING SOME BUILDINGS FOR HIGH RANKING GEMS THAT SHE USES THAT AS AN INSULT, and many others plus their leader ROSE Quartz who rebelled because she loved organic life like humans and wanted the colonization process Gone, and if your asking why is it happening in pinks only colony (SPOILER ALERT) it is because pink is rose and our pearl was hers it's less complicated when u watch the show it self and here's every thing that Steven's mom/rose quartz/pink has done:as pink she threw tantrums that SHATTERED THE WALLS AND MADE HER ORIGINAL PEARL A CRACK ON HER HEAD, ARGUING WITH THE DIAMONDS FOR A COLONY, LEFT HER SPINEL IN THE GARDEN FOR 6,000 Years, as rose She proofed bismuth for inventing the breaking point(a weapon who could shatter the diamonds) because she is a paficist got her pearl falling for her while she is in love with humans(especially Greg or as I like to call him "SoundCloud rapper" or Steven's dad).
