The Day You Became a Rabbit

The teacher says, “Open your books to page 39.” Rabbits. Great. How boring… Your head slowly sinks onto your folded arms. Your eyes close. When you open them again… something’s wrong. You have fur. Your heart is pounding fast. Your hands—no, paws—are tiny and soft. Long ears twitch on your head. It takes you a moment to realize what happened. You hop from your chair—and wow, what a jump! But in midair, you see it: the chair is gone, along with the entire classroom. You land in a lush, flower-covered valley high in the mountains. Around you stretches a sea of grass, dotted with stones under the wide open sky. Behind you, on the ridge of the mountain, stands a dark, ancient forest of towering trees. Far below, a wild river rushes into a vast, crystal-clear lake. The world feels fresh, alive—and utterly strange. Minutes pass before you remember your last thoughts. That’s when you hear a low howl behind you. Being a rabbit isn’t as easy as it looks. You try to scream, but it comes out as a high-pitched squeak. You stop and run. Your small paws carry you quickly away—but the howl comes again. Louder. Then another. Then—wolves! Your heart hammers in your chest. You freeze, watching the huge predators charge down a hill toward you. Massive, clawed paws pound the earth. Suddenly, another rabbit appears beside you and shoves you down into the grass, while the Wolfes still run forward to you.
