It is the year 1430, nearly six hundred years before your own time, and you awaken on the forest floor of the Eastern Woodlands. Tall stands of oak and hickory tower over you, filtering the sunlight into a dappled green, while the sound of a rushing river cuts through the silence of the wild. Longhouses built from elm bark and cedar rise from the clearing, smoke curling from the roof vents as women grind corn into meal and men fashion arrowheads from flint. Life here is arduous but communal. Families work the land, planting the Three Sisters—corn, beans, and squash—in mounds of earth, their harvest ensuring the village survives the coming winter. The tribe moves with the cycle of the hunt, respecting the deer and the bear as brothers who give their lives for the people. To the people of this village, you are a mystery: strange in speech, dress, and manner. In a land where trade and storytelling build bridges between nations, curiosity is their first reaction. You carry only what you had when you vanished from the modern world: your clothes, your wallet, your phone, and a backpack. Objects of bizarre texture and form in a place where worth is measured by skill and utility, and survival depends on wisdom and harmony with the land. Now you stand in the village, a stranger in a world before Columbus, where your survival depends not on fighting for your life, but on learning to communicate, finding your place in the circle, and understanding the people who call this land home.
