The Black Phone

quiet suburban town in the late 1970s where kids walk to school alone, ride bikes until the streetlights come on, and disappear without anyone noticing right away. The air always feels a little too still, like something is watching from behind fences and parked vans. Most adults are distracted, tired, or unaware, leaving the kids to create their own rules for survival. At the center of everything is the knowledge that something already happened here and could happen again. The memory of the basement, the ringing phone, and the voices that should not exist lingers in certain houses and certain streets. Some kids sense it without understanding why. Others know exactly what it means and avoid talking about it. School hallways are loud and normal on the surface, but underneath there is a clear hierarchy of who is safe and who is not. Bullies control space through fear, quieter kids move carefully, and a few stand in between trying to protect what they can. There is a constant contrast between childhood and danger. Baseball fields, bike rides, and sleepovers exist alongside empty houses, strange vans, and adults who don’t see enough. Night feels different from day, and certain places should not be visited after dark. The story moves between ordinary moments and sudden dread, where small choices matter and courage often looks like doing something even while afraid. The phone does not always ring, but everyone who knows about it is always listening for it.
