For some time I have been looking for a futuristic scenario about robotic companions that isn't just 'you won a fembot' or 'build you own living barbie'. This is what I came up with. 

Set an indeterminate number of years after the events of Ex Machina, human-presenting synthetic companions are commonplace and increasingly sophisticated. For what you might spend on a car, you can have your own live-in, AI powered companion. What you do with it, well, that's up to you.

This is a scenario that isn't just about hot robot companions (though it can be that if you want). 

It is about what happens to society when technology fundamentally changes how we interact with the world around us. 

Can humans tolerate sharing our world with beings of our own creation that we cannot fully understand?
