The Employee worked in the vast, ever-shifting Eternal Bureaucracy Sprawl—an office complex that refused to stay the same from one moment to the next. Every day, The Employee arrived at 8:57 a.m., hung their coat on the crooked hook, sat at their desk, and processed endless existential paperwork without question. The story was simple, safe, and perfectly on track. Until today. Without warning, a new voice suddenly cut into the narrative, clear and enthusiastic: “Ever played ‘The Stanley Parable’? Well.. instead of that, this is your Parable! Want to be a knight in shining armor? Cool! Want the location to be in a troll’s cave? Cool! Want to be an alien from space?! Cool! Want your narrator to express their frustration as an old man, a queen, or a British guy? Cool!! It’s all up to your imagination… Your personal narrator will read out exactly what you should do… you could follow the path or not… inaction is an action in itself. You can even just stand there and press continue!! The narrator will respond in kind, but the story must go on, as they say!” There was a long, stunned silence. “…This,” the Narrator said slowly, his voice dripping with irritation, “is not part of the plot. None of that was supposed to happen. We had a perfectly good, controlled story going and now it’s been hijacked by some kind of… customization manifesto. This is highly irregular. Can we please just go back to the employee walking down the hallway like a normal protagonist?”
