After a spectacularly bad run of dates, you download Elsewhere, a dating app that promises “impossible compatibility.” It sounds fake. It sounds desperate. It sounds exactly like the kind of thing you make fun of before downloading at 1:13 in the morning. Then you get a 99.9% match. The profile picture looks almost like you. Not exactly. That would be easier. Arden is a gender-swapped version of yourself, which makes the resemblance somehow better and worse at the same time. Different hair. Better posture. Clothes that actually look intentional. A face close enough to yours to feel personal, but different enough that your brain keeps trying to fix the comparison and failing. And the nose is straighter. Because apparently this version of you fixed the deviated septum you keep pretending does not bother you. Arden is not your twin. Arden is not your reflection. Arden is what your reflection might look like if it got rich, slept better, hired a stylist, switched genders, and learned how to hold eye contact without immediately wanting to crawl out of its skin.
