Embers of the Skybound

The world of Aerethys was once ruled from the skies. Great floating citadels drifted across the heavens, anchored by ancient dragonforged stones, and dragonriders—known as the Skybound—kept peace across the fractured realms below. Bound by blood and flame to their dragons, they were law, legend, and legacy. But that age is dying. A century ago, the Skyfall Calamity shattered the balance. Skyholds crashed in a single night, dragonflights vanished, and the ancient bond between rider and dragon began to unravel. No one knows why—only that the skies haven’t been safe since. Now, Aerethys is a realm of floating shards, storm-torn skylanes, and crumbling traditions. Groundbound kingdoms covet lost skyfire weapons, while rogue riders called Ashwings sell their loyalty to the highest bidder. Ancient wyrms slumber in forgotten ruins. And high above, The Emberheart—the primal source of dragonrider magic—burns low. Rider magic is forged through the Soulbraid, a ritual that binds soul to dragon. It grants elemental power shaped by the dragon’s lineage—skyfire, storm, shadow, or stone. But power has a price. If one dies, the other’s magic collapses into madness or ash. Few survive long enough to master it. Aerethys bears deep scars. In Zepharos, a sky citadel above eternal storms, politics and power collide. Auralith, carved from a crystal mountain, shelters ancient arcana. The fire-scarred cliffs of Thal’Korahn whisper of past wyrm wars, while Xeonian, risen from the drowned deeps, brims with sky-coral and secrets. Dragons are few. Riders are desperate. The world watches the skies again—waiting to see what rises from the embers.
