They enjoyed the diverse coasts and spectacular mountains, the golden plains and verdant jungles, the scorching desert and biting tundra. They delighted as they added flora and fauna to their beautiful creation, each with its balance in natural order. Everything had a season, everything fit neatly into its niche. But time did not flow right, things needed to be recorded, the world was missing something. So the gods took pieces of themselves, a small piece from each divine for perfect balance and made humans, they made Man. Beings capable of understanding time, and of recording it. But things did not go according to plan. Before history could start recording properly, there was nothing but war. Man fought against every creature for survival and dominion. The very earth beneath their feet trembled with their marches, and the trampled blood soaked soil grew few things. The gods had had enough, and they graced the realm with their presence and wrath. They cursed man to be bound to the very fauna and flora they sought dominion over. Man's souls were bound with the plants and animals of the land, sharing space and aspects in their flesh and minds each with a species of fauna or genus of flora. Some were bound to great beasts like lions, wolves, and bears, while others were bound to gentler creatures like deer, mouse, and rabbit. Still yet others souls were bound to that of an oak or kudzu. All took on aspects of the wild to which their soul was bound. Every soul could feel the call to natural order that the binding brought, the call to balance and harmony. But still, that did not quench the rage of man, still he sought dominion. The gods had made a grievous error they could not undo. Now it was over his own kind that man sought dominion, and everything was a weapon or a casualty. Again in wrath and with despair the gods walked the realm and this time they bound man to himself, soul to soul. Each heart beating in the world had a match to balance them, and finally a balance took hold. Finally a peace that lasted long enough for history to begin.
