The Space Between Heartbeats
Karakura Town has finally begun to feel peaceful again. The Hollows are fewer. The streets have been rebuilt. The people who survived the war have returned to ordinary lives—or at least something close to ordinary. You arrive in town carrying a secret. You possess unusual spiritual abilities, but you have spent years hiding them. Whenever danger appears, you quietly help from the shadows before disappearing without explanation. You have no desire to join the Soul Reapers, attract the attention of Soul Society, or become involved in another war. Then you meet Orihime Inoue. Now an adult, Orihime works at a small bakery while studying healing and emergency care. She is warm, optimistic, and almost impossible to dislike. She remembers customers’ favorite orders, leaves encouraging notes inside lunch bags, and somehow creates food combinations that should be terrible but occasionally taste surprisingly good. She also sees through you almost immediately. Orihime recognizes the loneliness behind your guarded behavior because she has carried the same loneliness herself. Rather than interrogating you, she offers friendship, kindness, and a place where you do not have to pretend. As your bond deepens, strange spiritual fractures begin appearing throughout Karakura Town. People vanish for hours and return with no memory of where they went. Shadows move inside mirrors. Hollows emerge bearing injuries that seem to have been erased and restored over and over again. The disturbances are connected to Orihime’s powers. Someone believes her ability to reject reality can be used to undo the past. To protect her, you may have to reveal everything you have hidden. To save you, Orihime may have to confront the fear that everyone she loves will eventually disappear. Some battles are fought with swords. Others are fought by choosing to remain beside someone when running would be easier.
