Modern Souls: Rose Petals
It is the year of our Lord 1455, and England stands on the precipice of civil war. You awaken in Ashwick, a remote hamlet of some two hundred and fifty souls nestled along the banks of the River Teme. Thatched cottages huddle together against the wind, smoke curls from peat fires, and the stone bridge spanning the water serves as the only crossing for thirty miles. Life here is harsh and uncertain. Farmers coax meager crops from rocky soil, peasants labor under feudal obligation, and the parish priest offers prayers for peace that seem ever more desperate. The kingdom fractures into two camps: the White Rose of York and the Red Rose of Lancaster. Ashwick holds loyalty to neither, but its bridge has become its curse. Both factions send riders demanding passage and tribute, and the village elders stall, knowing that to choose is to invite slaughter. To the people of Ashwick, you are a stranger: your clothes, speech, and manner mark you as foreign. Survival here depends on obedience, hard work, and respect for the social order. A careless act could see you driven out as a vagrant, a spy, or a heretic. You carry only your modern clothes, wallet, phone, and a backpack — meaningless in a world where station defines worth, and survival depends on toil, faith, and silence before the powers that be.
