Neon city’s 2097

In a world where corporations became governments, humanity sold its future for technology—and something ancient bought its way in. The year is 2097. The world that once existed is gone. There was no single apocalypse. No final war. No mushroom cloud that marked the end of civilization. Instead, civilization was slowly purchased. Corporations acquired governments, governments became dependent on corporations, militaries became private security forces, cities became corporate territories, and eventually the distinction between a government and a company disappeared entirely. The corporations called the transformation The Consolidation. History remembers it as The Quiet Takeover. By the beginning of the twenty-second century, humanity lives in a world ruled by corporate states. Money is law. Information is currency. Technology is power. Citizenship is a subscription. The old United States has been divided into dozens of corporate territories, independent city-states, military zones, radioactive wastelands, and lawless regions controlled by gangs, mercenaries, smugglers, and private armies. At the center of this new world is Star City. Once known as California, Star City has become the entertainment capital, technological center, and cultural heart of the corporate world. It is also one of the most dangerous places on Earth. ⸻ STAR CITY From the outside, Star City looks like humanity’s greatest achievement. A gigantic metropolis stretches along the Pacific coast, connecting what were once separate cities into one endless urban landscape. Skyscrapers disappear into the clouds. Flying vehicles weave between towers. Massive holographic advertisements cover entire buildings. Artificial beaches stretch along the coast. Luxury districts are built above neighborhoods where people survive in abandoned infrastructure. Neon signs illuminate streets that never become dark. The city is constantly alive. Music comes from clubs. Advertisements speak directly to pedestrians. Artificial intelligence assistants follow people everywhere. Corporate security drones patrol the skies. Digital billboards display the faces of celebrities whose appearances have been modified until they barely resemble the humans they were born as. Star City is beautiful. Star City is terrifying. And Star City belongs to Luxor Media Consortium. Luxor began as an entertainment company. It eventually purchased Hollywood. Then television networks. Then streaming services. Then advertising companies. Then modeling agencies. Then news organizations. Then political lobbying groups. Then private security. By the time the old government realized what Luxor had become, it was already too late. Luxor didn’t conquer California. It simply bought it. Today, Luxor controls almost every major form of entertainment produced in Star City. Movies. Music. Virtual reality. Fashion. Celebrity culture. Sports. News. Social media. Advertising. Cosmetic cybernetics. Even political propaganda. The people of Star City are constantly being entertained. And constantly being watched. ⸻ THE CORPORATE WORLD Luxor is only one of several corporations that dominate the world. Five corporations are considered the Great Powers. Each controls a different part of civilization. Luxor Media Consortium controls culture, entertainment, beauty, media, propaganda, and social influence. Helios Dynamics controls weapons, military technology, private armies, and advanced combat cybernetics. Omni-Gen controls biotechnology, medicine, genetic engineering, cloning, and artificial organs. Nexus Systems controls artificial intelligence, communications, cyber warfare, satellites, and global digital infrastructure. Vantage Industries controls energy production, mining, transportation, and the radioactive territories. They officially cooperate. Unofficially, they are constantly at war. Their conflicts rarely look like traditional wars. There are no armies marching across borders. Instead, there are hackers attacking financial networks. Assassins eliminating executives. Mercenaries sabotaging factories. Corporate spies infiltrating competitors. Artificial intelligence systems attacking one another. Propaganda campaigns manipulating entire populations. Economic warfare destroying cities without firing a bullet. The most important battles happen inside computers. The greatest soldiers are hackers. The deadliest weapons are pieces of code. And the most valuable battlefield is the human mind. ⸻ THE CYBER WAR Cyber warfare has become one of the largest industries in human history. Every major corporation has armies of hackers. Some fight from secure facilities. Others operate directly through neural implants..
