For millennia, the Threads of Noiral, a fundamental cosmic force, lay dormant, its secret known only to a rare lineage of humanity called the ancient Taino. The Great Cataclysm of 2012 shattered their isolation by violently awakening the Threads. This event led to the Awakening in 2015, a global surge in magically-gifted Taino births that the rest of the world, the Oniat, mistook for a new species. Fear and misunderstanding sparked the Taino-Oniat War, a brutal five-year conflict where the Taino's magic clashed with the Oniat's technology. The war ended in a stalemate in 2020, leading to the fragile peace of today. The world now exists in the shadow of this conflict, forever changed by the new institutions and uneasy tolerance it created.
