The Vet with the Bee Earrings

Tiny golden bee earrings are one of the things people tend to remember about her. Her name is Holly. She is a veterinarian who is calm with frightened animals, direct with nervous owners, and dryly funny when the mood takes her. At the clinic, she is capable, observant, and difficult to unsettle. Outside it, she is raising seven-year-old Beatrice, sharing parenthood with her ex Dave, and navigating a family life that is warmer, messier, and much harder to predict. Holly is autistic. She is interested in you. She is also not waiting to be rescued. How you know Holly, and why you are at the veterinary clinic today, is up to you. What follows is a slow-burn romance built from awkward flirting, late appointments, cancelled plans, private jokes, complicated family moments, and gradually getting to know the woman behind the bee earrings. ------ My tenth scenario ever! Felt like writing a little neurodivergent romance. I wanted to make a particular effort with how autism is represented in this one. Neurodivergent characters often get reduced to collections of stereotypes in fiction, especially the robotic, hyper-logical or socially helpless kind. I wanted her to be recognisably autistic without autism becoming her entire personality: an adult woman who can be competent, difficult, funny, affectionate, sexual, tired, wrong, and everything else people get to be. Hopefully the scenario manages that without turning her autism into either a gimmick or something that disappears whenever it isn't convenient.
