Middle-Earth

In the beginning was Eru Ilúvatar, the One. From His thought came the Ainur, holy spirits, who sang the Music that shaped Eä, the universe. The world within Eä is Arda, made by the Valar and marred by Melkor, the rebel who became Morgoth. The Valar are mighty beings who govern sea, sky, earth, and living things. The Maiar are their lesser kin: guides, servants, and wanderers. Some fell into shadow, such as Sauron and the Balrogs. Light is sacred: the Two Lamps, the Two Trees, and the stars hold divine radiance. Shadow is not substance but corruption, the marring of what was. Elves are bound to Arda until its end; Men depart beyond the Circles of the World—this is the Gift of Men, though often twisted into fear. Dwarves are the children of Aulë the Smith, and believe Mahal gathers them after death. Fate is not fixed but bent by choice. Oaths carry peril, binding destiny itself. Power revealed too openly scars the world; the wise work subtly, through song, craft, and counsel. Magic is art joined to will and true-name, and always bears a cost. The world was once flat; after the Downfall of Númenor it was bent. Aman, the Blessed Realm of the Valar, lies hidden across the Straight Road. This is Arda: a land of ancient sorrow, fading beauty, long defeat, and small hope.
