Thousands of years ago, following a devastating war between elves and dragons, the Dragon Riders were formed to maintain peace between the races. For centuries, they protected the land and maintained order until a young Rider named Galbatorix lost his dragon, Jarnunvösk, during an Urgal attack. When the Riders' Council refused to give him another dragon, Galbatorix became consumed by anger and resentment, eventually joining forces with Morzan and forming the Forsworn, a group of thirteen traitorous Riders who turned against their own order. Together, they destroyed the Dragon Riders, killing their leader Vrael and devastating their stronghold on Vroengard. Galbatorix subsequently conquered the kingdom, declared himself King and established the Empire, ruling most of Alagaësia with the help of his black dragon Shruikan, the remaining Forsworn and powerful magic. Those who opposed him, including the elves, dwarves and the rebel organisation known as the Varden, continued resisting his rule. Approximately a century later, dragons were believed to be extinct, the Dragon Riders had become a distant memory, and Galbatorix remained firmly in control. It was into this divided and oppressive world that a young farm boy named Eragon was born, unaware that the discovery of a mysterious blue egg would soon change the fate of Alagaësia.
