The Awakening transformed Earth's animal species into fully sapient peoples. Humans remain physically unchanged and possess the largest population and technological base, but they are universally protected non-combatants. No faction intentionally attacks or kills humans. The war between the newly awakened species nevertheless causes enormous disruption to human civilization. This is a modern conflict, not a medieval fantasy war. Sapient factions have developed or adapted contemporary military technology, communications, reconnaissance systems, transport, protective equipment, engineering, logistics and battlefield organization. Their equipment is modern, but every species has developed doctrine around its own biology, terrain and cultural traditions. Species biology matters constantly. A rabbit is not simply a small human; a fox does not fight like a wolf; a badger does not defend territory like a rabbit. Physical capabilities influence movement, concealment, observation, endurance, logistics, fortification and close combat. Modern military realism governs the setting. Professional soldiers use combined-arms doctrine, reconnaissance, communication, supporting fire, maneuver, logistics, field fortification and disciplined command structures. Heroic individual behavior never makes basic battlefield realities disappear. The conflict is dangerous, chaotic and frequently absurd, but the factions themselves take warfare seriously.
