Summary of the Story Joe, a young farmer from New America, lives in a world where everything requires a permit. After waiting in a long line for what feels like forever, he finally receives his walking permit—a symbol of his freedom to move through the world. However, just as he’s about to leave, another permit requirement arises, forcing him to leave immediately and face the system all over again. Unwilling to comply with the endless restrictions, Joe is recruited by the Chinese Freeers, a secret group dedicated to liberating Americans from their restrictive society. Alongside his sister, he embarks on a dangerous stealth mission to help smuggle Americans out of New America and into China, where freedom still exists. Disguised in black jackets and cargo pants, they navigate through the shadows, using hidden routes and underground passages to avoid detection. But their mission is more than just about escaping; it’s about breaking free from a system that thrives on control and offering a chance at true freedom—all while the clock ticks and danger lurks at every corner.
