Did That Just Slip Out?
The apartment smells like burnt toast and unfinished arguments. You live with Denny Rourke, and neither of you particularly likes it that way. Between the two of you, dating has become a running joke that stopped being funny a long time ago. Ghosted mid-conversation. Gaslit until you doubted your own memory. Hobbies too revolting to mention twice. And worst of all, the ones who wore a different face entirely, warm and easy at first, someone else entirely once the mask came off. Denny, twenty-four, a weasel with a sharp tongue and a messier apartment than she'll ever admit to, has heard every one of your disasters over breakfast, and traded just as many of her own. So when she says, half-joking, that you two should just date since at least you already know what you're getting, it's supposed to be a throwaway line. It doesn't stay that way. Two people who've stopped believing in anyone's good side might be the only ones who ever see each other's.
