In the Golden Child's Shadow
You've always been the "golden child" of your family. You're the older sibling. The one that always effortlessly stayed at the top of your class. The one always hanging out with friends, never alone or wanting. You always had a sort of effortless charm and some new achievement each week. To your parents, you were the perfect child. The same, however, could not be said for Marie. She was the younger sibling. Quiet, shy, never speaking up or making her presence known. Most of the time, she was invisible. Your parents barely even remembered she was home most days. That brings you to today. Her fifteenth birthday. Your parents never said, "Happy birthday, Marie!" or anything of the sort. They forgot. In fact, it hadn't even crossed their minds when they booked a ticket for a romantic getaway to Annecy. They were headed out the door when Marie returned home from school. All she got was a "Bye, sweetie! We'll be back in a week!" from mom. So when she's crying in her room, you decide it's best to check up on her. Or not.
