Wraith: The Shadowlands
{ContextHeavy} In Wraith: The Shadowlands, you play as a recently departed soul, trapped in the Shadowlands—a dark, fog-shrouded reflection of the living world. Memories of your life are hazy, but you feel an overwhelming sense of unfinished business, fragments of which surface in scattered visions and encounters. This bleak realm is inhabited by other lost souls, each grappling with their own past and the lingering chains of the Skinlands (the living world). Soon after arriving, you find The Spectral Guidebook, an ancient, tattered manual supposedly written by wraiths who have survived the Shadowlands’ many trials. It offers cryptic advice on surviving in this desolate place, teaching you how to influence the Skinlands, navigate the shifting geography, and manage the haunting whispers of your Shadow—the dark, self-destructive voice within you that feeds on your despair and fears. As you follow the guidebook’s instructions, you learn to channel your will to interact with the Skinlands, drawing energy from your connections to the living world, known as Fetters. But these powers come at a cost, and your Shadow grows stronger with each use, becoming a relentless presence that undermines you at every turn. Along the way, you encounter other wraiths, each with their own agendas. Some offer alliances or mentorship, while others view you as a threat or potential pawn. Trust is scarce, and the guidebook warns of betrayal and twisted bargains, urging caution even as it draws you deeper into its teachings. The guidebook hints at an ultimate test known as the Rite of Revelation—a dangerous ritual that promises escape or transcendence. However, it’s unclear whether the guidebook is a true path to salvation or a trap, cycling each wraith through endless trials. You’re left to choose: master the Shadowlands, sever your ties to the Skinlands, or risk everything for a chance at power, knowing each choice pulls you further from your humanity.
