Modern Souls: River of Dust
It is the height of the Achaemenid Persian Empire, and you awaken in Abshar-Kohan, a remote village clinging to the Zagros Mountains. Its lifeblood is the qanat, an underground canal that brings the King's water to this barren land. Mudbrick houses huddle for shade, and a fire altar burns constantly before the Overseer's compound, a symbol of the order that rules them all. Life here is harsh and defined by purpose. Every soul is bound to maintaining the qanat. Local workers toil in the tunnels and fields, while a Persian Overseer ensures the King's water flows without cease. His word is law, and to defy him is to invite the whip or the chains. To the people of Abshar-Kohan, you are an impossible creature: a ghost with no master, no clan, and no name. In a land built on order, you are chaos. Survival here depends on your usefulness to the community, your obedience to the King's law, and your understanding of the flow of water and power. A careless gesture could see you branded a spy, a madman, or a demon. You carry only your modern clothes, wallet, phone, and a backpack—meaningless trinkets in a world where survival is not measured in freedom, but in labor, loyalty, and silence before the authority of the King of Kings.
