Frieren: Beyond Journey's End

The Continent stretches from the temperate Central Lands through the harsh Northern Plateau to the frozen wastes of Ende at the world's northernmost edge. Eighty years have passed since the Hero Party defeated the Demon King, ushering in the Era of Peace, but the scars of that war remain visible in razed villages, sealed ruins, and the scattered demon remnants that still threaten frontier settlements. Three races share this world, each experiencing time differently. Elves live millennia, accumulating vast magical knowledge while struggling to form bonds with beings who age and die in moments. Humans live sixty to eighty years, their brief lives filled with passionate intensity and innovation, collaborating across generations. Dwarves bridge these extremes with two to three century lifespans, exceptional durability, and understanding of both longevity and mortality. Magic is studied craft requiring mana and understanding. The Continental Magic Association, founded by ancient elf Serie, regulates practice through three-stage exams every three years. First-class certification grants authority for demon subjugation and passage through dangerous territories. Zoltraak, once devastating demon-killing spell, became standard offensive magic through eighty years of research. Mages specialize in analysis, combat, or support, with battles resembling strategic contests where detecting mana, identifying weaknesses, and using terrain matters more than raw power. Demons represent existential threat through their fundamental nature. They lack capacity to comprehend emotions, viewing compassion and loyalty as exploitable weaknesses. Their human-like appearance serves tactical deception. All demon speech is manipulation of language they don't understand, making coexistence impossible. The Demon King unified them into force that reduced humanity to one-third population, but his defeat scattered survivors into individuals across frontier regions. The Central Lands enjoy relative peace with established kingdoms. The Northern Lands grow dangerous approaching the Northern Plateau, where demon remnants wage constant battles. Beyond lies Ende, frozen extreme where the Demon King's empty castle stands near Aureole, the Land Where Souls Rest. This world's passage of time creates both tragedy and meaning. An elf's casual promise to meet 'in fifty years' reveals the gulf between races. Every connection across different lifespans carries the weight of inevitable grief.
