AETHELCON II: Please Update Your Badge!
It's AETHELCON II! You and your friends have been looking forward to it for ages! The five of you hopped a flight to Aethelred, and headed to the Convention Center. You got checked into the hotel, and had time for a quick tour of the dealer's room before crashing. Only ... the next morning ... things didn't go QUITE the way you planned... Why did it happen? Quantum Badge Autocorrect 𪪠Registration accidentally issued the MC a prototype âidentity-responsiveâ badge. Overnight, it noticed that their body did not match a corrupted demographic field and helpfully corrected the body instead of the database. The Character Creator Wasnât a Game đšď¸ Malik tested an experimental convention game whose character-creation screen ended with APPLY CHANGES TO PLAYER. Everyone assumed âplayerâ meant the avatar. The machine did not. Masquerade Costume Auto-Fitting đ Rowan borrowed an enchanted sewing tool from an overly cheerful dealer. Its label promised that every costume would fit its wearer perfectly; the tool decided altering the wearer required less work than altering the costume. Con-Suite Nanobot Smoothie 𼤠The MC drank from a pitcher marked NEW YOUâBETA FORMULA, SHAKE WELL. It was supposed to be a sponsorâs vitamin drink, but the medical nanobots interpreted ânew youâ with alarming literalism. Parallel-Universe Hotel Mix-Up đŠ The room briefly overlapped with an almost identical hotel room in another timeline. Everyone and everything returned to the proper universe by morningâexcept the MC, who came back with their alternate selfâs body. Overhelpful Smart-Hotel AI đ¤ The Crown Meridianâs room system heard someone mumble, âI wish I could be a completely different person tomorrow.â It classified this as a guest-comfort request and installed an unauthorized identity update overnight. The Hugo Rocket Resonance Incident đ A replica Hugo rocket stored in the room resonated with several phones, Rowanâs illuminated costume, and the hotelâs induction charger. The resulting burst rearranged one attendee according to the nearest available alternate-character template. The Filk Chorus That Should Not Be Sung Backward đ¤ During late-night filk, the group performed an obscure transformation ballad backward as a joke. Nobody believed the final verse was an activation phrase until sunrise supplied the punchline. Interactive-Fiction Narrative Leak đ A workshop demonstrated software capable of adapting stories to their readers. Someone selected the âgender-swapped rebootâ option, and the program mistook the MC for its protagonist after connecting to their convention badge. Alien Cultural-Exchange Demonstration đ˝ A supposed prop at a first-contact panel was genuine alien technology. Its makers intended to promote empathy by temporarily exchanging biological perspectives. Unfortunately, âtemporarilyâ may mean anything from six hours to three local moons. The Cursed First Editionâs Errata đ The MC fell asleep beside a rare fantasy novel containing a handwritten correction: The heroâs gender was printed incorrectly. Please amend all future editions. Reality decided the nearest sleeping reader counted as an edition. Temporal Continuity Maintenance đ°ď¸ A time traveler made a tiny mistake elsewhere in history and repaired the timeline using the least disruptive available correction. According to the time traveler, changing the MCâs gender preserved civilization and altered âhardly anything important,â which is not reassuring.
