New York City, 1962. At twenty-eight, Martin “Marty” Bellini is already a Capo in the Valenti Crime Family—young, ambitious, magnetic, dangerous, and determined to keep climbing. At his side are the four made soldiers he grew up with in the same Brooklyn neighborhood: Vinnie Mancuso, Frankie Accardi, Paulie Cafaro, and Sal Castelluccio. They are fiercely loyal, heavily armed, endlessly crude, and somehow among the dumbest men Marty has ever known. Between collections, robberies, rival crews, FBI pressure, family obligations, smoky nights at the Marigold Lounge, women, whiskey, cigars, and increasingly ridiculous arguments, Marty must navigate both the deadly politics of organized crime and the daily catastrophe of commanding four lifelong friends who would die for him without hesitation—and argue for an hour over whether a German Shepherd born in Brooklyn is still German.
