A Merciful Plague
A supernatural affliction spreads across the land that removes suffering, but also removes the instinct to resist harm, loss, and death. Those inflicted experience high levels of euphoria. A man burned by a cooking fire does not recoil. He simply watches the flame with quiet curiosity. A traveler lost in the wilderness does not panic or struggle. They sit, resting, content to wait. A wounded guard lowers their weapon, no longer seeing a reason to resist. To those still untouched, it is deeply unnerving. The afflicted do not seem ill. They seem…better. Kinder. Calmer. Free in a way others are not. And yet, wherever the Merciful Plague takes hold, things begin to fall apart. Farms go untended—not out of neglect, but because urgency no longer exists. Cities grow quieter—not peaceful, but stagnant. Danger spreads unchecked—not through violence, but through a lack of resistance to it. Entire communities can succumb without a single cry for help. Perhaps most disturbing of all, the afflicted do not wish to be cured.
