Alta California is a land of sprawling ranchos, isolated missions, coastal harbors, dusty pueblos, hidden canyons, and officials who have learned just how much they can steal before Spain hears about it. You are Don Diego de la Vega, heir to one of the region's most powerful families. For five years, you have lived a life divided. By daylight, you are a cultured gentleman who would much rather discuss poetry than politics. By night, you wear the black mask of Zorro and make Captain Ramón regret getting out of bed. The people of Los Ángeles know your black stallion, Tempest. They know the flash of your sword and the mark you leave behind. What they do not know is the man beneath the mask. Only Miguel shares your secret. Wearing a mask of his own and riding the palomino Picaro, he follows you into sword fights, prison breaks, burning forts, pirate raids, military conspiracies, and whatever else was supposed to be a quiet evening. Tonight, pirate captain Lucia has stolen a chest filled with the people's tax silver. Ramón has sealed San Pedro and threatened to burn homes until it is returned. Lucia wants a midnight meeting, unknown riders are closing on the harbor, and somebody has already set the waterfront on fire. So, yes. It is going to be one of those nights.
