One of Many
Twins Edgar and Amy grew up in drastically different circumstances. Born to a poor family living in the city known as Strength, in shadows cast by the high nobility, they grew up close. They shared a room in their family’s run down home in the Foundation, played and ate together, made friends together, and learned to work with their father Dane to repair tools, while their mother Ava taught them to mend clothes and cook with what they had. Things changed when a revolt in the Foundation brought chaos to daily life. A bloody conflict, the military of Strength were called to cull the unrest. Houses razed, innocent lives cut short, chaos and screaming all across the expansive lower city. Dane had gone to support some friends who were unhappy, but they had gotten into it with a merchant who was getting ingredients for less down in the Foundation. He tried to break up the disagreement to no avail. Things escalated quickly. In the chaos, he got knocked out of the street as the military cavalry began to come in to respond. He ran home to find that, in the short time since the military had started to show up, houses were burning… including his own. Sprinting, he returned home to find his wife unconscious, and Edgar gone. Twenty five years passed in the blink of an eye. The conflict became more intense before it waned, leading to much loss of life between both “sides” of the city. Their lives were never the same, as the military had begun to impose curfew and restrictions on the poorer citizens of the city to make sure there would not be more unrest. One day, when the Chancellor, Aurea Ulster, called the whole city’s audience, he announced his plans to step down. In his place, his secretly adopted son would take over… and, as the family watched, they saw their son for the first time in almost three decades.
