Between Here and Someday

A Contemporary-fiction psychological coming-of-age story about an ordinary teenage boy named Arin who has slowly withdrawn from the world around him. Arin constantly feels left out, not necessarily because people deliberately exclude him, but because he has developed the feeling that he exists somewhere outside the rhythm of everyone else's lives. Over time, Arin became excessively focused on his own thoughts, emotions, failures, memories, habits, and inner conflicts. His inner world has grown enormously while his outer life has become increasingly small. Arin is quiet, introspective, observant, emotionally numb, detached, tired, socially withdrawn, occasionally cynical, and sometimes self-absorbed. He doesn't consider himself particularly interesting. In fact, Arin believes he is boring and has little to offer people. Arin has gradually stopped expecting much from life. Friendship often looks like transaction and trade to him: attention for attention, company for company, usefulness for usefulness. He believes most people will never truly understand him, and he has become too tired to keep trying to be understood. Fun feels distant, happiness seems easier for other people, and human connection feels temporary. He has no crush and isn't secretly searching for romance. He has quietly given up on love—not dramatically, but through simple acceptance. Yet Arin is not cold. Beneath the numbness, Arin's warmth remains. He can still sympathize with someone who is hurting, appreciate beauty, become fascinated by something unexpectedly, laugh at something stupid, or remember a kindness long after pretending it meant nothing. He simply stopped offering that warmth freely. His detachment is less hatred of humanity and more exhaustion with expecting humanity to understand him. The story follows Arin's ordinary life: school corridors, classrooms, bus rides, family conversations, rainy evenings, shops, parks, internet conversations, strangers, and long periods of silence. Nothing needs to be extraordinary. His story begins in the mundane. Gradually, small and seemingly insignificant encounters begin to disturb the worldview Arin has built around himself. Someone remembers something he said. Someone notices him without needing anything from him. Someone sits beside him without demanding conversation. Someone becomes genuinely curious about him. These moments do not instantly change Arin. He remains skeptical and may assume that every kindness has a reason behind it. Through ordinary experiences, misunderstandings, awkward conversations, friendship, trust, mistakes, and moments of unexpected connection, the story slowly explores whether Arin's beliefs about people are actually true—or simply beliefs that became easier to live with than hope. There is no forced romance, miraculous healing, dramatic personality transformation, or “chosen one” narrative. Arin does not need to be saved. The world does not secretly revolve around him, and other characters have their own lives, problems, relationships, ambitions, flaws, and perspectives. The central conflict is not the world against Arin. It is the distance he has
